GEORGE IOVINO
the story of george iovino
George Iovino was never a member of Bellmore-Merrick Roller Hockey but we will forever be connected, and are truly grateful, and honored to carry on his name.
George lived locally and unfortunately passed away last November. His friends, mainly from Mepham High School’s Class of ’69, and family, told us that he was a really “special guy”. The past few years, George would go for daily walks around Eisenhower Park. He would then post something about his walk in his friends group chat and on the school’s reunion social media page. George would always end the post with something motivating and inspiring. Everyone always looked forward to seeing these and they all found something good from social media.
When the sudden news broke, that George had passed, his friends and family wanted to do something in his honor. Since his walks were so special, they collected donations to purchase a bench, in George’s memory at Eisenhower Park. “From the overwhelming support received; the collections yielded more than the actual cost of the bench purchase. Rather than divide up the left-over funds and give back to those who wanted to honor George, I met with George’s kids to see where they could make a donation, in his honor” said close friend, Joseph Brucia.
It turns out, George was a huge hockey fan. Although he never played, the Iovino Family thought it would be a great idea to donate to a local Youth Hockey Organization and that is where BMRH came into play.
“We are extremely thankful for the generosity of the Iovino Family, Joseph Brucia, and all of George’s friends, for thinking about us. In honor of George and the wonderful donation made to BMRH, we too wanted to show our appreciation. In the upcoming weeks, as a special dedication, a memorial logo will be displayed on the boards as we will proudly honor George. Although George never played in the league, he will be a part of our alum, forever. ” – said President, Dave Manara.
Thank you, George.
